Australia has banned the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir under new hate speech legislation, making membership or financial support a criminal offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the ban, recommended by ASIO, is designed to prevent the group from spreading hate and creating pathways to violence.
