Chemists at the University of Manchester and IBM Research have discovered a "half-Möbius"-shaped molecule with a novel topology that requires four circuits around its ring to return to a starting point, compared to two for a traditional Möbius strip. The researchers created the structure using 13 carbon atoms and two chlorine atoms on a gold surface, and demonstrated they could switch its twist using electromagnetic pulses and quantum computers to model electron interactions.
