Scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology have developed lipid-coated nanopores that increase power generation from osmotic energy—produced by mixing saltwater and freshwater—by two to threefold compared to current technologies. The lipid coating reduces friction in the nanopores, allowing ions to pass through more efficiently while maintaining selectivity, achieving a power density of approximately 15 watts per square meter.
