Researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducted a trial in August 2025 in which ships dumped 65,000 liters of alkaline sodium hydroxide into the Gulf of Maine to test ocean-based carbon removal, removing an estimated 2 to 10 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere over four days with no significant impact on marine life. The team acknowledged that manufacturing and transportation emissions from the experiment have not yet been calculated, leaving unclear whether the trial achieved net CO2 removal.
