Google unveiled a plan Friday to secure HTTPS certificates against quantum computer attacks by using Merkle Tree Certificates that compress 2.5 kilobytes of quantum-resistant cryptographic data into roughly 64 bytes, the current certificate size. The approach, already implemented in Chrome and being tested by Cloudflare with approximately 1,000 TLS certificates, aims to prevent performance degradation while protecting against potential quantum-enabled attacks on classical encryption.
